We use UPS for 99% of our shipments.

After we weigh each cone of yarn for a "net weight" (the yarn less the cardboard cone)
and choose the appropriate size box for the shipment,
we weigh the entire order for a "gross weight" (UPS requires us to round up to the nearest pound).
After entering the weight and dimensions of the box, www.ups.com calculates the rate
and this is what the customer is charged.

If a package only weighs 5-6 pounds, we check USPS (US Mail) to see if First Class
or Priority is a more economical way to ship.  We try to choose the cheapest carrier
to save our customers money when we can.
