OE or "Open End" spun cotton: shorter cotton fibers spun to produce a nice yarn but usually is not as soft or strong as Ring-Spun cotton. Items woven with OE cotton will often "track," which appears after the woven item has been washed and dried. Tracking looks as if a pattern has been woven when only tabby or plain weave was treadled....very pretty and interesting results! Our current "OE" cotton is grown in the Delta Regions of the U.S.A. and spun here as well!
RS or "Ring Spun" cotton: longer cotton fibers spun to produce a softer & stronger yarn than OE spun cotton. It has a slight "sheen." It does not track when woven in tabby weave as much as OE cotton. It is softer to the touch and has more drape than OE cotton. Our current "RS" cotton is grown in the Eastern & Delta Regions of the U.S.A. and spun here as well!
Suggestion: When I weave cotton towels (and I weave a lot of them), I often will warp with an OE cotton and weave with a RS cotton. This way I get the best of both worlds! Not super "flimsy" as all RS spun BUT not as "stiff" as all OE spun. I personally like the end result....Phyllis Narus
Note: I also find that the OE yarn doesn't "fray" at the selvedge edges as much as the RS yarn does...especially on 12-14 yard warps. That's why I prefer to use OE spun for my warps.
If I want to use RS yarn in my warp, I will usually thread about 8-10 threads on each selvedge edge with OE yarn.
